Special Features
Writing Competitions
Each year South Perth Primary School hosts a whole school writing competition for all Pre Primary to Year 7 students as a lead up to the WA Young Writers and the Christobel Mattingly competitions. Students can win book prizes in the junior, middle and upper primary sections and these are presented at a special assembly. Our writing is a special feature of South Perth Primary School and in 2004 our school was judged equal winner of the Syd Donovan medal for the most outstanding Primary School in the 2004 WA Young Writers Competition.

Artist in Residence
We have enjoyed a variety of visiting artists over the past four years: 2002 - 2005. Each year the P&C have been awarded a grant from the City of South Perth and this has provided the bulk of the funding required for the Artist in Residence projects.
In 2005 all students were involved in a contemporary dance (Hip hop, Funk) residence conducted by Steps Dance Company (Yrs 4-7) and Mel Davies (Yrs PP-3).
Anna Brockway and Mark Storen are the Play Company and they were our contracted performing artists for 2004. All Pre-Primary to Year 7 students were engaged in some street theatre on the final day.
Paula Hart was employed in 2003 and she conducted textile, collage and paper mache workshops.
In 2002 Natalie Poli was employed for two weeks and she conducted printmaking, ceramics, puppet making and drawing workshops with the students.
The concept of an artist-in-residence program is to become a regular feature of the Arts program at South Perth Primary.
Milyu
In 1991 South Perth Primary adopted a piece of the Swan River foreshore for a school vegetation project. Milyu Nature Reserve was a neglected piece of remnant bushland adjacent to a migrating feeding ground where thousands of birds come to feed from August to April each year. The school has successfully established an exciting integrated education programme from Years 1 to 7. Read More
Permaculture Garden
In 1996 the school established a Permaculture garden in the grounds of the school. It was believed that such a garden would complement the curriculum and provide hands-on teaching for our students.Read More
Physical Education
The school provides a wide variety of Physical Education activities including a Dance Program, a Gym program, Bike Education, First Aid, Cross Country, Swimming and Athletics carnivals and Softball, Cricket and Tennis carnivals.
School Band
The school band was formed at South Perth Primary School in 2005 under the expert guidance of Helen Urquart and with support from Darren Crowthers, a parent. It has developed further in 2006 and now includes Yr 7 students from Como Primary School as well as Year 6 and 7 students from South Perth Primary School.
Japanese
All year 3-7 students learn Japanese in their study of Languages Other Than English (L.O.T.E.) under the guidance of Mrs Bradshaw. It is a requirement of the Department of Education and Training that all Year 3 - 7 students study a language. This is also a requirement in Curriculum Framework which ensures that all WA students are exposed / involved in learning another language. Mrs Bradshaw does a terrific job and has worked very hard in raising the profile of Japanese in our school.
Student Decision Making
Our school has a strong belief in the concept of students as decision makers. At the senior level six student leaders are elected by the students and staff for the year. In 2002 we nominated two additional student leaders on a term-by-term basis and this proved to be an excellent incentive for our Year Seven leaders. This process enabled more students to be involved in leadership and provided them with goal setting opportunities throughout the year. Extra leadership responsibilities are also provided for year seven faction captains and vice-captains.
Assemblies
Assemblies are conducted on a Friday morning 8:50am - 9:30am on a fortnightly basis i.e. Week 2, 4, 6, 8 & 10 of each term. Everybody is welcome at the assemblies and you will see class items, class reports, leader's reports the awarding of merit certificates and individual performances.
House Competition
South Perth Primary School has four houses: Strickland (Red), Shenton (Blue), Murdoch (Gold) and Forrest (Green).
Year 7 Leadership Course
In 2003 all of our Year 7s participated in a half day leadership workshop subsidised by the City of South Perth. This workshop focused on team building, conflict resolution and leadership. In 2004 we plan to run a series of these workshops with the Year 7 students to assist them in their social development. These workshops will assist us in preparing for the Year 7 camp which sees many of these skills and attitudes put into practice.
End of Year Functions for Year 7's
At the end of each year, there are several functions for the Year 7 students. Awards are presented at the Year 7 Graduation.
Ripper Recess
A fun fete-style event which is planned, organised and run by the students, their teachers and parent volunteers. Money raised goes back into the school.
Academic Competitions
Each year children from this school are able to enter the University of NSW, Australasian Schools Competition and the Australian Mathematics Competition for the Westpac Awards. This is a great opportunity for students to demonstrate their skills in these subject areas while taking part in the largest independent assessment program available in Australia. All students receive a certificate as well as a report on their results.
Students at Educational Risk (SAER) Program
SAER (is an abbreviation used by the Department of Education and Training) for Students At Educational Risk. By risk we refer to students who are in danger of not achieving at their level eg. Literacy, numeracy, mental well being, behaviour, physical well being, social development... An example of SAER programs include: Support a Reader, Cluster PEAC, Support a Writer and Behaviour Management Plans. At our school we have a SAER co-ordinator (Mrs Taylor) who manages this area.
Debating
In 2003 the year 6 and 7 students participated in some interschool debating competitions.
